This week, we say farewell to a leader, a mentor, and a true advocate for educators as Brad Weidenaar leaves our district to step into a new role as an assistant principal in another district. While we are excited for Brad and the opportunity that awaits him, his departure leaves a noticeable space in our community, one shaped by decades of unwavering commitment, advocacy, and leadership.

Brad has been a steadfast pillar in our local teacher association since the very beginning of his career. He joined the association in 1994, and from that moment on, his belief in the power of collective voice and shared purpose has never wavered. Brad understood early on that being a part of the union was more than just a formality:  it was a responsibility. He quickly became a building representative in 1999 and began lending his voice to support and uplift his colleagues at the ground level.

In 2002, Brad took on the role of president of the local association. He brought not just leadership but a genuine passion for serving and representing others. His calm demeanor, thoughtful approach, and deep understanding of both the classroom and the contract made him a trusted leader. Colleagues knew that Brad would not only listen but would act with their best interests in mind.

Brad’s advocacy found a lasting home in negotiations. He joined the negotiations team in 2004 and took over as head negotiator around 2011. Over the years, he became the quiet force behind countless hours of work to improve working conditions for educators and learning conditions for students. His deep respect for the process, paired with his steady presence at the table, made him both a fierce advocate and a respected collaborator. Those who worked alongside him saw the care and precision he brought to every contract discussion and the way he could explain complex terms in a way that made sense. More than once, a fellow teacher walked away from a conversation with Brad saying, “I finally understand what that means.” That was one of Brad’s gifts.  He brought clarity, not just to language, but to purpose.

Brad also spent years as an instructional coach at the high school level, shaping the professional growth of countless educators. His support was never about judgment. It was about elevating practice, building confidence, and helping teachers grow into the professionals they wanted to be. Brad’s coaching style reflected the same values he brought to his union work: respect, partnership, and a deep belief in people. He never tried to be the loudest voice in the room. Instead, he helped others find theirs.

Perhaps what stands out most about Brad is his humility. He never sought recognition, but his impact is undeniable. He has been the voice of reason in hard moments, the keeper of institutional knowledge, and the person many turned to when they needed steady guidance. Whether he was explaining a contract clause, brainstorming solutions to a challenge, or reminding someone to take a breath, Brad approached everything with integrity and heart.

As he moves into this new role as assistant principal, Brad carries with him not only years of experience but the deep respect of his peers. His leadership journey is far from over.  It  is simply taking a new path. And while we will miss him terribly, we know the school community he is joining is gaining someone special.

Before he left, Brad shared the advice he gives to every member: Get involved. Even if it’s just serving as a building rep, your involvement matters. That message captures the essence of who Brad is and what he stands for. He has always believed in the power of showing up, of standing with others, and of contributing where you can. That belief has strengthened our association and helped sustain it through the years.

To Brad: Thank you. Thank you for your leadership, your steady presence, your countless hours of service, and your unwavering belief in this work. You have left a legacy that will not be forgotten. We are better because of you.

As you take this next step in your career, know that you carry our admiration and gratitude. We hope your new school recognizes the rare gift they are receiving. And we hope you’ll carry with you the same message you’ve shared with us: stay involved, stay committed, and know that even the smallest roles can create lasting impact.

Congratulations, Brad. You will be missed. You will also be cheered on every step of the way.
