Big News: I’m Officially Part of GenerationAI!
Okay, friends—hold onto your keyboards because I’ve got some major news. In January 2025, I was selected to join GenerationAI, an incredible initiative led by ISTE+ASCD. This isn’t your average professional development—oh no, this is where the future of education and artificial intelligence collide in the most exciting way possible!
This program is a 15-month adventure made possible by a $10 million investment from Google.org. The program’s goal? Equip educators like me with the skills to effectively and responsibly integrate AI into classrooms across the country. And let me tell you, this is not your typical “let’s just throw some tech in the mix and hope for the best” initiative. This is intentional, people.
I was chosen out of hundreds of applicants (shocking, right?), and now, I’m part of a cohort of education leaders from 38 states. We’re an eclectic bunch, but one thing’s for sure: we’re ready to take the AI world by storm—and hopefully, we won’t cause any unexpected chaos in the process (just kidding, that’s definitely not part of the curriculum).
What’s the Goal? Transforming Education
The GenerationAI program has a pretty big mission: to give educators the tools, knowledge, and resources to transform education with AI. I mean, it’s not every day that you get to be part of something that could literally change the way students learn in the future—and by “future,” I mean like tomorrow.
On February 4th and 5th, I had the pleasure of attending our Community of Practice in Chicago, where I met my fellow cohort members for the first time. We took a group photo (see below) and got down to business, collaborating and brainstorming what this 15-month adventure would look like. And trust me, it’s going to be epic.
Over the next 15 months, I’ll be engaging in all sorts of exciting tasks, such as:
- Collaborating with Fellow Educators: Monthly virtual sessions with my fellow cohort members (we’re like a Zoom party, but with more intellectual discussions and fewer pizza deliveries).
- Developing AI Solutions for Educational Challenges: No big deal, just coming up with brilliant ideas that’ll help teachers and students everywhere get the most out of AI.
- Action Research and Evaluation: Yes, I’ll be doing some heavy lifting in the research department. Expect dazzling reports coming your way.
- Creating Resources to Share with All of You: Because why keep all this AI goodness to myself? We’re going to create best practices that’ll help all educators use AI responsibly in their classrooms.
- Working with Experts: And by “working with experts,” I mean rubbing elbows with researchers and specialists who actually know what they’re doing (I’ll be taking notes—lots of notes).
Why Does This Matter?
Now, if you’re still wondering why this matters, here’s the scoop. The GenerationAI cohort represents a pretty wide swath of American education, with educators from Title I schools, rural districts, and communities that are underrepresented in STEM. The best part? Fifty percent of leadership positions in the cohort are held by women. Yep, ladies are taking the lead in shaping the future of education, and I am so here for it.
This isn’t just about me, though. It’s about all of us—over 200,000 educators nationwide will benefit from this program. So, not only will I learn how to integrate AI into my virtual special education classroom, but I’ll also have the chance to collaborate with teachers from all walks of life, ensuring that we’re creating AI resources that are truly accessible to all.
What’s Next?
This program is part of Google’s $75 million AI Opportunity Fund, which aims to help one million Americans access AI training in their local communities. So, in case you didn’t think the future was already looking bright, this is the kind of stuff that’s going to put us all on the AI map.
And if you’re thinking, “Wait, I want to get in on this AI action too!”—don’t worry. The GenerationAI programming will be reaching educators nationwide through some fantastic partnerships with organizations like the Center for Black Educator Development, Latinos for Education, National Education Association, and more. So there’s still time for you to join the movement.
The Bottom Line?
This is an incredible opportunity that I’m beyond thrilled to be a part of. Not only will it empower me to bring more innovative, AI-driven learning strategies to my students, but I’ll also have the chance to be part of a nationwide network of educators who are equally excited about the future of education. I can’t wait to see how this experience will shape my teaching—and how it’ll ultimately help students everywhere prepare for an AI-driven world.
